GLOW is the streaming service’s hotly anticipated new comedy series, and judging by the new trailer, it’s going to be all kinds of fun.

What is it about?

It’s based on the history of Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling, a real professional wrestling promotion that was briefly on US telly in the late 80s and early 90s.

The show tells the story of a fictional actress named Ruth Wilder who, struggling for work in 1980s LA, auditions for GLOW along with 12 other women.

Community fans will recognise Alison Brie (AKA Annie Edison) as Ruth, and comedian Marc Maron stars as the show’s director.

In more random casting news, Kate Nash – yes, ‘You said I must eat so many lemons, cos I am so BIT-AH’ Kate Nash – plays one of the would-be wrestlers.

Well, aside from the whole lady wrestling thing – GLOW’s executive producer is Jenji Kohan of Orange Is The New Black, which has been lauded for its treatment of complex female characters.

And indeed, the trailer positions GLOW as an empowering, almost feminist gig for actresses normally left playing secretaries and wives (though we’ll reserve judgement until we see if the ‘Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling’ get to be more than just gorgeous).

Not to mention, the costumes, hair, and music promise to be 80s-tastic. Worth a shot, we reckon.

When can we watch it?

The whole thing drops on Netflix on June 23, which gives you more than enough time to get through all of Master of None first – and something funny and light to chase the fifth season of OITNB with. Yay!
